Obion County Board of Education
December 3, 2012

Agenda Item: VIII.G.

Consider/Approve Resolution Opposing the Federal Budget Control Act of 2011

Background Information:

On October 29, 2012, school board chairmen and school superintendents across the State received an email from TSBA urging Boards to adopt a resolution opposing federal budget cuts that are required by the Federal Budget Control Act of 2011. If enacted, the federal government will impose an across-the-board cut of 8.2% to education and other domestic programs in January, 2013. The attached resolution opposes such drastic actions by Congress and sets forth how the proposed budget cuts could affect public education, not only in Obion County, but across the nation. These across-the-board budget cuts would impact school districts during the 2013 – 2014 school year and could result in teacher and staff lay-offs, loss of intervention programs, and an increased tax burden on local residents for additional unfunded federal mandates.

Staff Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the resolution opposing the Federal Budget Control Act of 2011.
